Well, we often hear that those involved in long-distance relationships eventually drift apart and break up because of the distance barrier and well, because of proximity reasons. But that does not mean that long-distance relationships won’t work!
It can work and has worked for many. My parents are a great example by the way. I feel that so long as there is a strong commitment from you and your partner to overcome the odds in a long-distance relationship, it will definitely work out!
Speaking of my parents, well they had their long distance relationship for a total of 14 years! And they have shared with me the 10 ways to make a long distance relationship work! Here they are:
1. Be clear about your feelings
Always be articulate with your partner about your feelings, expectations, clashing issues, and aspirations. Be honest when communicating with your partner and always keep each other updated about the things happening in each other’s life.
2. Know what you want from your relationship
Have a mutual understanding about what are your expectations and wishes right from the start. State how regular you’ll meet online or call each other and make a commitment to each other to do so.
3. Reassure each other of your feelings
Don’t be afraid to say “I love you” often and just reassure each other by doing so. It helps to build confidence in your partner that you are committed in the relationship.
4. Communicate daily
Make use of the internet and headphone to keep in touch with each other. Well, if you can’t afford to call on the phone daily because it is too expensive, SMS, e-mail or instant message each other. A good investment will be the webcam and you can make use of the video calling feature to be able to see each other as often as possible.
5. Meet up whenever possible
Plan trips to countries and meet up over there. Or you can plan regular meetings at a place where you both just need to travel an equal distance to get there. As you do not see each other daily in person, always make an extra effort to make the meeting special.
6. Send care packages/surprise mails
Send personalised gift packages such as cards, stuffed animals, photos, or collectables. Be creative as you can get in personalising the gift – maybe even making the gift!
7. Be patient
You may feel things move slowly in a long-distance relationship. You need to be patient with time, as true love will come with the test of time.
8. Make occasions extra special and memorable
On occasions like Valentine’s Day, anniversaries, or your partner’s birthday, make them memorable and unforgettable. Take the chance to talk on the phone longer or spend more time chatting online to each other. If you can, it will be great if you could also make a surprise visit down to him/her!
9. Keep yourself busy
You can’t be brooding over your distant loved one every second. So, get busy! By getting involved in activities that you are passionate about, such as sports or travelling. Or just trying out a new activity! Also, don’t forget spending social time with your family and friends.

10. Trust each other Trust is an important factor in a long-distance relationship. Having constant doubts about your partner’s motives will ultimately destroy the relationship!
People in long-distance relationships do not need to be miserable in them. On the brighter side of things, it can actually be fun!
Well, absence makes the heart grow fonder, right? Always remember that you’re special in someone’s heart even though that someone is miles away. And with the right ingredients of trust, patience, and most importantly, commitment, you can be sure that your long-distance relationship can be able to work and endure with the test of time.
Remember, love has no boundaries!
