Vacations are fun and relaxing, but it can be a challenge to maintain a healthy lifestyle while away from home. It’s hard to avoid eating junk food while the airport is packed with sugary and salty snacks. Not to mention, fast food is a go-to choice when you’re on the move. You are also off your regular exercise schedule and far from your gym. This make exercising a challenge.
You can stay healthy while on vacation with a little preparation and effort. Follow these 5 tips:
1. Pack healthy grab-and-go snacks
If you pack healthy snacks, you will not be tempted to snack on the airport cookies or chips. They are also great to bring along when you spend a day out and about while on vacation. Bring healthy snacks such as apples, veggies, trail mix or walnuts with dried fruit. Also, remember to bring water!
2. Choose a hotel with a refrigerator and gym
When looking for a hotel, try to find one with the essentials you’ll need to maintain a healthy lifestyle such as a refrigerator and gym. A refrigerator will allow you to do some of your regular grocery shopping. Healthy foods, like fruits and veggies, usually need to be kept cold. The hotel gyms usually do not have much, but being able to just hop on a treadmill in the morning will allow you to stay caught up on your exercising.
3. Bring an exercise mat on vacation
An exercise mat allows you to exercise almost anywhere. They are also pretty light and slim. If you can fit one in your bag, bring it along. If you are going to a destination with a beach, you can either use a mat or simply a towel.
4. Take a walk
You can pretty much take a walk anywhere. Walking is a fun exercise you can do with family and friends. It’s also a great way to explore the area around you. Get out and take walks every day to enjoy your vacation area while being active.
5. Go swimming
Swimming is also a fun activity while on vacation. If there is a pool available, go swimming often. Instead of just standing around in the pool, swim laps for a cardio workout.
Of course, relaxation is good for health too. Be sure to use this time to relax. Maybe you do not want to stick to your normal workout routine, but it’s also good to continue including some exercise in your day while away. Otherwise, if you eat unhealthy and are inactive the whole trip, you will have a lot of catching up to do when you are back home. Make it easier on yourself by continually living a healthy lifestyle, even when on vacation.
